If you love “Pirates of the Caribbean,” imagine Captain Jack Sparrow and Davey Jones, but put them in flying ships and island sky cities full of magical relics that essentially give people super powers, and you’ve got Bound by the Sky by Megan G. Elisabeth!
This book came to me through my favorite not-so-secret book club, The Bound Society, and I wasn’t expecting this steampunk pirate romantasy to reel me in as quickly as it did! Megan’s balance of world building while keeping the plot moving is masterful. I never got bogged down with descriptive paragraphs designed to “set the scene” and each chapter propelled the story forward.
Speaking of the story… this one revolves around wealthy only child and heiress, Amaya Sinclair, who is kidnapped by a band of pirates led by Sky Lord Graven, who believes she is the key to finding and unlocking a lost vault of relics that would make him the most powerful Sky Lord to have ever existed. However, a rival Sky Lord, William Lexington, takes her captive, determined to hold her on his ship until he can ensure Graven is either dead, or the vault destroyed and his goal impossible. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), Lord Lexington is dashingly handsome, uncharacteristically gentle, and absolutely swoon-worthy. All of this pirate drama is going on in a political climate where the people who live on the ground are essentially running a black market of these sky relics, ruining the sky cities’ economies and forcing the Sky Lords to resort to violence to get their property back. And Amaya? Well, she just happens to be the daughter of the Lord Mayor of Sorrento (one of the most powerful cities). Makes things just slightly more complicated, huh?
Now that you have the basics of the plot, let’s get into the characters. Amaya goes from being a mischievous heiress with a penchant for stressing her father out to damn near a pirate herself. Her growth throughout the story is noticeable but she keeps her soft heart and never forgets where she came from and those she left behind - which I absolutely adore about her. William Lexington is a fine af sky daddy who was thrust into the sky pirate life after experiencing tremendous tragedy. He goes from this mysterious, feared Sky Lord known for slaying those who get on his bad side in the most bloody ways possible to the most romantic MC I think I’ve ever met. He isn’t overly possessive, but rather builds Amaya up to her potential, never being scared to see her shine. AND THE SIDE CHARACTERS - I AM OBSESSED WITH THE SIDE CHARACTERS! Phineus and Grace, to be specific. I SWEAR TO GOD, MEGAN… IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO EITHER OF THESE CHARACTERS, YOU AND I WILL BE HAVING SOME WORDS!
There is a 1-2 pepper spice level with only a couple love scenes. They aren’t overly explicit, but you definitely know what went down behind the closed (or not-so-closed) doors. Personally, those are my favorite kind of love scenes. I don’t need it completely spelled out for me, as they usually don’t add a whole lot to the plot and just fill pages.
Overall, I give this book a 5/5 stars - it’s one of the top 3 of 2026! The Sky Pirates theme was a nice change of pace from Fae vs Humans plots and the steampunk element of it all gave me visuals à la Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West.” I need the second book ASAP!
